A 30-day delivery transformed parking at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport with 19 automated lanes, QR payments, and Ethiopia's first fully cashless parking experience.
In just 30 days, USP Parking completed a major parking technology upgrade at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, bringing a fast, cashless, and accessible experience to travelers using both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
The delivery covered 19 lanes across Ethiopia's busiest international gateway: nine entry lanes and ten exit lanes equipped with state-of-the-art automated parking systems. Developed in collaboration with technology partner TGW, the Android-based solution is the first fully cashless parking system in Ethiopia and provides customers with real-time digital receipts.
Completed on an accelerated timeline, the project reflects the focus and coordination of USP Parking's technical and operations teams. It also marks an important step in USP's wider commitment to modernizing urban mobility across Addis Ababa.
A simpler journey from entry to exit
The new process is designed to be intuitive. A driver pulls a ticket when entering the airport parking area. About five minutes before leaving, the driver scans the ticket's QR code with any phone, completes payment on the webpage that opens, and then presents the paid QR code at the exit gate.
The result is a smooth, contactless journey with no need to handle cash at the barrier. Digital confirmation and real-time receipts give customers a clear record of each transaction while helping the airport keep vehicles moving efficiently through its parking facilities.
Flexible digital payments
The payment experience was built around the services Ethiopian drivers already use. After scanning the QR code, customers can see the parking fee and select from a broad range of payment options, including telebirr, Awash Bank, CBE Birr, Bank of Abyssinia, Oromia Bank, Visa, and Mastercard.
SantimPay Financial Solution supported the payment integration, connecting the parking platform to local wallets, banks, and international card networks in a single browser-based experience. No dedicated app is required; any standard QR reader can open the payment page.
Accessibility remains part of the design. Travelers without smartphones or digital wallets can use dedicated parking pay stations at both terminals, so the move to cashless operations does not leave customers without a practical way to pay.
Part of a wider mobility transformation
The airport upgrade is one part of a broader parking transformation underway across Addis Ababa. In a short period, USP has introduced three complementary systems in the city: gated parking, gateless parking, and on-street parking.
Together, these formats allow parking technology to respond to different environments, from controlled airport facilities to open urban streets. The common goal is to make parking easier to use, simpler to manage, and better connected to the digital payment ecosystem.
This is just the beginning. The transformation of Addis Ababa's parking landscape is well underway.
